Mercer University was established in Penfield, Georgia, as a young men's private academy under Billington McCarthy Sanders, an educator who served as the primary president, and Adiel Sherwood, a Baptist clergyman who beforehand established a young men's physical work school that served as a model. The school opened as Mercer Institute with 39 understudies on January 14, 1833.[16] The school was named for Jesse Mercer,[18] a conspicuous Baptist pioneer who gave an establishing enrichment and who served as the primary administrator of the leading group of trustees.[16][19] The Georgia General Assembly allowed a college sanction in December 1837.[16] Mercer embraced its present name in 1838 and graduated its first college class, of three understudies, in 1841.
